Some kids are just born bad, and the lack of over-explanation is part of what’s potent here. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, of course. This definitely is not an opportunity to polish up the psychological realism of the narrative. So what have we gained by updating The Bad Seed for 2018? Very little. Call it The Bad Seed and you tap into a surface-glaze legitimacy that’s probably unwarranted, because the movie, notable as co-star Rob Lowe’s directing debut, achieves only a baseline amount of trashy fun, nothing more or less. Call this latest Lifetime flick How Can I Get Back Into the Dating Pool When My Daughter Keeps Killing People? and you generate enthusiastic eye-rolling and drinking games.

It’s a long way to go in order to attach a recognizable brand name to what would otherwise be a pretty standard Lifetime movie in one of the network’s tried-and-true genres. Barbara Marshall wrote the new teleplay, with nods to the original 1954 novel by William March, the subsequent play by Maxwell Anderson and the feature screenplay by John Lee Mahin. The seed escapes being eaten but is now alone and the story suggests that the seed became bad due to these circumstances. It is interesting that the seed seems to accept that its fate is to be bad because it was separated from its big family in the sunflower and packaged into a bag of seeds to be eaten. How does the perspective on gender/race/culture/economics/ability make a difference to the story? Because the main character is a seed and not characterized as a person or specific gender I think it is relatable for children of various genders and races. Multiple illustrations on some pages give visuals for each example of being bad or good, such as never washing hands, or holding doors for others. Aesthetically, the book is pleasing to the eye and engaging. The illustrations come from the concept artist for films such as Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Hotel Transylvania. The concept of being good versus being bad are ones young children would easily understand. Sentences are simple and would be great for an early reader to learn words. Literary elements at work in the story: Repetition occurs frequently to emphasize that the main character is a baaaaaad seed. Even though he still makes mistakes, he keeps trying every day. He tries his best to become well-behaved. Summary: The main character is a sunflower seed who is behaves badly but eventually decides he doesn’t want to be known as the bad seed anymore.
